Open-shelving in the kitchen has been trending look for a while now. Are we still in to it? Yes! We usually add at least some open shelving in to every kitchen we design, even in spaces where we know we want to maximize closed storage space. Adding shelves makes your kitchen feel more expansive and creates a styling opportunity that can really elevate the design. Here are a few ways you can make the open shelving look work for you.

Use a Mix of Open and Closed Storage

If you are worried about sacrificing storage space for your open-shelving, dedicated only one small portion for display shelves, and use enclosed cabinetry for the rest of the space. This will give you plenty of space to tuck away kitchen essentials, and allow you to display your favorite pieces.

Invest in Pretty Everyday Dishes

If you only fill your open shelves with styling props, they might look beautiful, but they will feel like wasted space. Instead, we like to make our shelves work for us. We keep all our everyday dish and glassware on our shelves, This keeps them easy to find and close at hand. Keep the look beautiful by retiring your mismatched set of plastic kids dishes for a pretty matched everyday set you love. We like to go with classic white because it creates a crisp cafe vibe, but if you love color, this is a fun way to bring it in to your space.

Open Up your Island

Find an unusual place for your open shelves. Here, we added built-in shelves to the end of our custom island. This created a little spot to add in pretty pieces that add personality to the space.

Add a Shelf to your Backsplash

A stone shelf at the top of your kitchen backsplash creates the prettiest functional storage. It’s a shelf that allows you to keep your cooking essentials close at hand. Style with your favorite cooking oils, salt and pepper shakers, a crock full of wooden utensils and cutting boards.

Add a Single Shelf for a Clean Modern Look

Think open shelving creates a look that is too busy? In this basement kitchenette, we added one single floating shelf to store dishes, glassware, and pretty canisters full of favorite movie snacks. The look is clean and welcoming.

For us, this is a look to love. For more trends we think have timeless appeal, be sure to check back soon!
