Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in home design—and it’s often one of the most overlooked. Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to refresh a space, thoughtful lighting choices can completely transform the mood, function, and beauty of your home.
Today I’m sharing some of my favorite tips on how to use lighting not just as a necessity, but as a design element that elevates your entire space.
1. Layer Your Lighting
Great lighting is all about layers. I always recommend using a mix of ambient, task, and accent lighting to create depth and flexibility. Start with overhead fixtures for general illumination, then add sconces, floor lamps, or table lamps for warmth and personality.

In a living room, for example, a beautiful chandelier or flush mount anchors the space, while a pair of table lamps behind a sofa softens the mood and makes the room feel cozy at night.
2. Make a Statement
Lighting is one of the easiest ways to bring personality into a space. Think of your light fixtures as the jewelry of your home—whether it’s a sculptural pendant over the dining table or vintage-inspired sconces in the powder bath, the right piece can act as both function and art.

In recent projects, I’ve been loving warm brass finishes, globe silhouettes, and oversized woven pendants for a relaxed, elevated vibe.
3. Think About Scale
One of the most common mistakes I see is choosing lighting that’s too small. Don’t be afraid to go big! A bold pendant in the entryway or a large chandelier over your kitchen island draws the eye and helps define the space.

When in doubt, measure—and then size up slightly. It almost always looks better than you think it will.
4. Dim It Down
Dimmers are a must. They allow you to shift the atmosphere from bright and energizing in the morning to soft and relaxing in the evening. I always recommend adding dimmers to overhead lights in the kitchen, dining room, and bedrooms for maximum flexibility.

It’s a small detail that makes a big difference in how a room feels.
5. Use Natural Light as Your Guide
When planning your lighting, always take cues from the natural light already available. In rooms with a lot of sunlight, you might focus more on accent and mood lighting for the evenings. In darker spaces (think hallways or windowless bathrooms), a brighter, layered plan will help the room feel more open and airy.

Bonus Tip: mirrors can help bounce light around and make a room feel instantly brighter.
Lighting is where form meets function—it’s practical, but it also has the power to shape the way you experience your home. Whether you’re choosing the perfect kitchen pendants or layering soft lamps in a bedroom retreat, let your lighting reflect your personal style and the way you want your space to feel.
