Today we are partnering with our friend and client Ally Shupe from Sis & Taylor to give you steps for a great DIY nightstand. Remember our post about “Jewel Tones for Fall“? The beautiful emerald green nightstand featured in that post was an ikea hack. See below for the steps Ally took to create this unique nightstand for her master bedroom.
When we laid out the master bedroom design, Ally expressed she wanted to incorporate her favorite color of green in to the space. After scouring the internet, she discovered that finding that perfect shade of emerald green in a nightstand was pretty much impossible, so she decided to do it herself!
Ally started with these nightstands from IKEA. She ultimately chose them because they were solid wood, which would be easy to sand and paint and provided the durability needed. She also knew she could make easy adjustments to them–different knobs and legs–to achieve the exact style she was envisioning. This Benjamin Moore paint in high gloss seemed to be the perfect shade. Ally knew she wanted more of a modern leg on the nightstands so she searched and found these (8″ height). The barrel brass pull was the finishing touch, found here.
To create one of these nightstands, lay out all of your wooden pieces flat, including the legs. Sand and prime all of the wood pieces. Once the primer is dry, add two coats of Benjamin Moore Seaweed high-gloss paint. Let your paint dry over night, put your nightstand together according the Ikea directions. Ally added two additional pieces of wood at the base of the IKEA nightstands to add more of a secure structure for the long modern legs. Two-by-four cut down to approximately (2) 13″ pieces should do the trick. Then screw the two cut pieces of two by four in vertically at the base of the nightstand and attach two legs to each piece. The final step, add the brass pulls!
