3 Tips for a More Functional Laundry Space

Laundry rooms takes a lot of abuse, especially if they double as a utility space. They are full of dirty clothes, muddy shoes, soup, cleaning supplies, and lots of water. Although we care a lot about our spaces looking beautiful, we care even more that they are livable. Here are three ways we designed a more functional laundry space in our Golden Hour Project.

Durable Flooring

The flooring in this laundry space is beautiful but ultra durable. It is part of the Becki Owens Collection from HEWN floors in the Weathered color. Crafted largely from from stone, the floors have the rich warm beauty of wood but hold up effortlessly to kids, pets, water, and general ware-and-tear. We love this wood-alternative flooring. Open Shelving

Make use of vertical space to maximize opportunities for storage. Although we often opt for upper cabinets in the laundry room, in this project the shape of the space allowed for a lot of lower cabinets. We chose to fill the vertical space with wood shelving that creates an open airy vibe, adds warmth, and creates an easy-to-grab space for essentials like detergent and towels.

Countertop above Washer and Dryer

It is so much easier to stay on top of sorting and folding laundry if you have the space to do it. Here, we created a built-in for the washer and dryer that allowed us to add counter space above it. It is a perfect location for folding as you take clothes out of the dryer, rather than dumping them into a bin to be folded later. We chose maintenance free Quartz in a soft gray. We love the way cool gray looks with the warm flooring.
