Our Three Falls Project is a beauty set against the rugged mountains of Utah’s Wasatch Range.  In the home, traditional meets modern rustic with exposed stone, warm honey woods, earthy accent paints, and beautiful furnishings for a space that welcomes with comfort and warmth. Last week we shared the project’s kitchen, this week we want to show the adjacent living space. Take a look how we  created flow and defined the boundaries of the living room in the open concept space.

One of the defining design elements of the space, is the interior stone walls that add texture, organic beauty, and help create cohesive flow from the entry, to the living room, and then back to the kitchen. We used Prominence Stone, Normandy Blend. It adds incredibly organic beauty and natural warmth to the space.

Another statement maker in the space is the two-way stone fireplace. It visually encloses the living space, while still keeping a beautiful open flow.

We grounded the space with an oversize rug that adds the prettiest pattern. In an open-concept space, a rug creates a boundary between living room and kitchen. It helps to defines the space. On the rug, we layered a selection of furniture to host a crowd. We used different materials and textures for a more interesting, collected look.

A pair of upholstered sofas invite lounging. The light upholstery keeps the stone space feeling lighter and airier. We always use a performance fabric on chairs and sofas to keep them family and guest friendly. A pair of wood and leather chairs sits across from the sofa, adding a more modern rustic note. A set of velvet stools encloses the square of seating and can be used as an extra seat or moved around to act as side table or to prop feet.

A beautiful whitewashed coffee table further keeps the space fresh and light. The neutral space is welcoming, but doesn’t distract from the incredible mountain views our the oversize glass windows and doors in the space.

The velvet upholstery from the stools, is picked up again on the side of the room in a pair of lounge chairs designed for relaxing while taking in the incredible piano.

Layers of lighting complete the space, from the huge iron lantern that helps fill the sweeping ceiling, to the white ceramic table lamps that add soft glow behind the sofa and task floor lamps that add focused light by the seating. In every space, we use several light sources so we can change the light from soft and moody to extra bright to fit the time of day and occasion. Of course in this space, the most important light is the natural sunlight streaming in from the windows.
