Perfecting the Flex Room

The flex room is such a fun space to design. It’s a room that accommodates multiple purposes and usually a range of ages and so it challenges our creativity in making it both functional and fun. Each flex room in our projects turns out very different based on our client’s needs, but we always make sure that they are durable, make a statement, and have natural flow. Take a look at some of our favorite flex space from our recent designs!

The bunk room of our Beach Front Project is designed to sleep a crowd, includes an extra vanity for those that need to prep while the attached bath is occupied, and has a comfortable lounge space with a TV. Since this home was designed as a rental, we knew that we wanted bunks that work for the kids but that were also large enough to comfortably sleep adults. It was also important to have spaces that double in function to allows everyone to find both spots for gathering and quiet places for moments of seclusion.

We also thought about durability. In high use flex rooms, we typically use wood floors that clean up easily and then add soft rugs to add warmth and to capture sound.

Golden Hour Project

The front room of our Golden Hour Project is multi-functional. Beautiful arches open the space as a continuation of a welcoming entry. Built-ins under the front window create a functional office and study space, while a small sofa creates a spot to chat with guests.

Although we opted for a beautiful rattan sofa, the space is large enough to accommodate a pull-out sofa to more comfortable sleep a crowd.

A fun little nook under the stairs creates a fort for the kids to read and play in while the adults are chatting or working. It’s an unexpected detail that makes the house work for all ages.

Family Ties Custom Build

Our Family Ties Flex Space was a challenge because we were truly trying to create a room that would be the ultimate hangout for all ages. We created a media corner with a theater screen, super comfortable sectional, and kitchenette. We sectioned off a  gaming area with ping pong and foosball. And we designed a custom built-in playhouse with slide that is a dream for kids of all ages. It’s a space that is super functional but feels lux and special.
