When designing a home with gathering in mind, we love creating spaces that invite people to linger, whether that means sharing a meal, watching a game, enjoying a snack between activities, or settling in for a movie night. The Oasis Project is a great example of how thoughtful design can turn a home into a destination for entertaining and everyday play. Although there are several comfortable living spaces in the home, we wanted another area for gathering built around play. Rather than relying on one large gathering space, we created a collection of inviting social zones, each with its own purpose and personality. From the court lounge to the dining nook, snack shack, and theater, every space offers a different way to come together while keeping the overall experience connected.
A Court Lounge for Casual Gathering

A great gathering space doesn’t always need to revolve around a dining table or formal living room. In the Oasis Project, the court lounge creates a comfortable place to relax, watch the action, and reconnect between games. When designing a lounge near an activity space, think about how people will use it throughout the day. Comfortable, durable seating encourages guests to settle in, while flexible furniture arrangements make it easy to accommodate everything from a few spectators to a larger group. The goal is to create a space that feels like an extension of the activity itself, somewhere people naturally gravitate whether they’re playing or cheering from the sidelines.

A Dining Nook That Encourages Connection

Every entertaining-focused home needs a place to gather around a meal. We love a dining nook because it offers a more intimate alternative to a large formal dining room. In the Oasis Project, this space provides a natural place to pause, share food, and spend time together. When planning a dining area, consider its proximity to the kitchen and other gathering spaces. Easy circulation is key, especially when several people are moving between activities. A generous table, comfortable seating, and thoughtful lighting help make the nook feel welcoming without taking up more space than necessary. It’s a reminder that some of the best moments happen when everyone slows down and gathers around the table.

A Kid Friendly Snack Shack for Easy Entertaining

One of our favorite ways to make a home more functional for gathering is to create a dedicated spot for snacks and refreshments. The Oasis Project’s snack shack brings a fun, casual element to entertaining while making it easy for guests to help themselves. Think of it as a mini hospitality station: a place for drinks, grab-and-go snacks, and everything guests might need between meals or activities. Keeping refreshments accessible helps minimize traffic through the main kitchen and gives everyone a little more independence. When designing a snack area, prioritize convenient storage, easy-to-clean surfaces, and accessible refrigeration. It can be a small footprint with a big impact on how effortlessly a home hosts a crowd.
Make Room for Movie Nights with a Dedicated Theater

Not every gathering needs to be active. Sometimes the best way to spend time together is to settle in for a movie. The Oasis Project’s theater adds another layer of entertaining to the home, creating a dedicated destination for movie nights, sporting events, and relaxed evenings with family and friends. When designing a theater, comfort and atmosphere should lead the way. Consider generous seating, layered lighting that can be adjusted for different activities, and thoughtful acoustic treatments to create an immersive experience. A darker, more intimate palette can also help distinguish the theater from the brighter social spaces throughout the home. It’s all about creating a space that feels special while still being comfortable enough to enjoy for hours.

At the end of the day, the best homes are designed around the way people actually live. The Oasis Project is a reminder that entertaining doesn’t have to happen in just one room. By creating a variety of social zones for dining, relaxing, snacking, and playing, we can make a home feel more welcoming, more functional, and more fun. It’s about balancing beautiful design with thoughtful details that make gathering effortless. Whether you’re hosting a crowd or enjoying a laid-back afternoon with family, a well-designed home gives everyone a reason to come together.
