I love looking at beautiful architecture, and I often admire the choices for exterior paint. Choosing the paint color of a home is a big decision. It can be a difficult process. Tip #1

Now days we have such great resources for exterior inspirations. I have my own exterior folder on Pinterest. Collect several of your favorite exteriors via Pinterest and driving through neighborhoods you love. Then narrow them down to your favorite. Notice how many of the really pretty homes have simple color schemes, maybe one or two colors and they blend well with their neighborhood, geography and landscape.

Tip #2

Consider the size and location of your home. For example, if you have a home that sits far away from the curb, painting it a lighter color will make it seem closer. Also, the size of the lot matters. If you have a larger home on a small lot, painting the house a darker color will make it seem smaller, making the lot seem bigger.

Tip #3

When you are deciding which color to use, put several swatches up on your home. Then, come back at different times of day, in different lighting to determine which is your favorite. You can even take photos to contrast and compare. Shadows, sun and weather affect the color, so take your time, even a week or two to make the final decision.

Love this! Thank you for posting about exterior colors. An area that’s just as important as the interior of a home. What color would you recommend for a craftsman style cabin? We are building a lake cabin in Idaho and I cannot decide on a color!

Love these colors. What would you recommend for a stucco home in so cal.? We have a red tile roof and all the houses in our neighborhood are beige. Kinda want the house to stand out, but in a good way. Are there certain exterior colors that are off limits for stucco? 🙂

This is a great post! And what a wonderful tool Pinterest has become for choosing exterior paint. Finding a nice blend of neutral but still eye-catching can be a real art form. I also 100% agree with putting swatches up against your home. Just because you love something on a bright, sunny day does not mean you will love it when the sky is overcast. And when in doubt, consult with a professional. Chances are they’ve seen it all, and will be able to help you make the best decision for your home.

    Hi Becki,

Great post! I plan to paint the body of my house Farrow & Ball all white and the shutters and doors F&B Railings. Should the trim be painted all white as well, but in a different finish? Thanks!
