Rugs transform a space. They help to define the look and vibe of your home through color, pattern, and texture. Equally important, they add a grounding layer of softness that invites welcomes you in to a space. But a too small or too large rug can throw off the look and feel of a space. They feel awkward and so distract from the rest of your space. Today we’re sharing our tips for finding the perfect sized rug for each room in your home.
Living Room
Your living room might be one of your most used spaces and certainly the one most often seen by guests. The rug should make the room feel inviting and well put together. The most common mistake is a rug that is too small. Unless you live in a very small space, you will most likely need an 8′ x 10′ or larger depending on the size of the room and the look you like.
Living Room Look #1: Front Legs on the Rug
This is the most common living room look. Your rug should be large enough that at least the front legs of all your furniture (with the possible exception of side tables) are on the rug. This arrangement works especially well if your sofa is against the wall. Leave at least 18″-24″ inches of flooring space around the rug to create a natural border that will frame the rug. Unless you live in a very small space, you will likely need at least an 8″ x 10″ to make this work. In a large room, size up on your rug so that your furniture fills the space while still keeping to the front legs on the rug rule.
Living Room Look #2: All Legs on the Rug
Another option is to float all of your furniture on an oversized rug. This is a great look in an open concept home because the rug works to define the living space. You will want a rug big enough that at least 6″ of rug extends past all your furniture. a 12″-18″ border of flooring around the rug provides a nice natural frame and ensures that the rug doesn’t look awkwardly big in the space.
Bedroom
Although your bedroom might already be carpeted, adding a rug adds creates a plush softness to your room while making the space more interesting through color or pattern.
Bedroom Look #1: Just the Bed on the Rug
If you have pretty flooring that you still want to show off, or you already have plush carpet and just want to add some interest to the space, opt for a smaller rug and place it in front of your nightstands so that only 2/3rds of the bed is on the rug. If you are adding a bench or seating at the foot of the bed, that furniture should also be on the rug in order to create a cohesive look. This might mean sizing up on the rug, or pulling the rug forward so that only the bottom 1/3rd of the bed is on the rug. If you have a queen bed, a 6′ x 9′ rug will likely be large enough. For a king, you will need an 8′ x 10′.
Bedroom Look #2: All Furniture on the Rug
If you want to cover up a carpet you don’t like, or just really want to show off a rug you love, use an 8′ x 10′ or larger. When possible, leave a minimum of 2 feet of soft rug underfoot around the bed. For a king bed, you will need a 9′ x 12′.
Dining Room
A rug in the dining room might not make sense for your family. But if you have wood floors, a rug will really help protect against damage caused by spills. A dining rug also elevates the space and creates a more welcoming formal vibe.
Dining Room #1: Table and Seating for 6
Dining Room #2: Table and Seating for 8 or More
Styling Tip: In a large space it might be more affordable to layer rugs. Jute and sisal rugs are usually a more affordable rug option. Let an oversize jute form a border around a smaller and more affordable pattern rug you love.
