We love the start of the year with new projects, inspirations, and  design trends to share. Since we get asked a lot of questions about kitchen remodeling, we wanted to start this year off with an affordable but still beautiful design trend, porcelain countertops. We recently used them in out Villa Bonita 2 Project (sharing the space soon but in the meantime here’s a sneak peek on instagram). We were happy with how they turned out. Here’s what you need to know about this design trend.

What are Porcelain Countertops?

Porcelain is a man-made marble alternative countertop similar to Quartz. Although Quartz counters have been the go to for those that need a pretty but bullet proof option, porcelain is gaining popularity. Fans argue that it’s more realistic because the veining and colors of your favorite stone can be copied and reproduced on your slab using ink jet printing technologies.

Porcelain slabs are hard and durable. They are not porous and so do not etch or stain like marble. They are relatively affordable, comparable in price to Quartz. They can handle hot and cold temperatures and so can be used both inside and outside. They beautifully and more affordably create full slab walls in the kitchen and bathroom.

Cons of Porcelain Countertops

Although it is a realistic, it is a reproduced stone look. For those of you that want authenticity, a real stone slab might be for you if you can handle the upkeep, cost, and care required. Also, because porcelain is newer on the US market, your local fabricator might not have the experience or tools to correctly install it. Although porcelain is very durable once installed, it can chip or crack during installation if done incorrectly. Ask around and find someone with experience.

We are excited to show you how porcelain turned out in our own recent projets so check back soon! And come back for more trending design ideas as we welcome in 2022!

Ahhhh! I love these images. Such great inspiration for my kitchen. I just got my cabinets refinished a white color so I am trying to decide what kind of countertops I’ve been wanting. This definitely sold me on the porcelain. Keep up the inspiration. Us non-interior decorators need it!
