Design Trend: Dining Spaces w/ Black Accents

March 16, 2017

Where we dine are some of the most important spaces in our homes. Whether they are smaller kitchen nooks or larger dining rooms these spaces are for gathering, refueling and good conversation. I love creating beautiful dining spaces and have been pinning for upcoming projects with these rooms in mind. One of the my favorite trends, that I’ve been using in my own designs, is the use of bold black accents to give these spaces polished, sophisticated detail. In the following spaces you will see how black creates beautiful contrast and acts as a great neutral that binds the room. I hope you enjoy this wonderful trend and will maybe will find a way to incorporate it into your own homes. Enjoy!

Las Palmas Project Living + Dining Room

February 15, 2017

Last week I shared the fresh white kitchen of my coastal bohemian Las Palmas Project. Today, I am excited to continue the tour with the living and dining rooms. Like the kitchen, these spaces have clean, neutral foundations layered with organic texture, rich color, and hints of black for modern polish. Take a peek inside this beautiful modern bohemian coastal home.

In the living room, we took advantage of the light-filled room by layering whites. We started with walls painted Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and a beautiful vintage kilim in black and white stripe, added two large white linen sofas, and custom white drapes. The living room is open to the second story which creates a pretty airiness, but the drapes help define the space and keep it from feeling cavernous.

From the white foundation, we added different colors and textures to create warmth and interest. Black and brass accents keep the space modern, while warm natural woods of the coffee and side tables create an organic coastal feel.

Vintage textiles bring pattern to the space. I love this large-scale framed textile on the wall paired with mudcloth throw pillows.

A cozy dining nook sits open to the entry. We kept the entire dining table design natural and relied on texture rather than color to add interest. A round natural oak table is paired with these awesome woven dining chairs and a the chandelier made of intricate cocoa beads. The door painted in Benjamin Moore Black Satin adds contrast to the light woods in the space.

In an open-concept space, lighting can define each area. This statement light makes the dining space feel separate and unique from the rest of the room. For tips on how to hang your own statement light, check out this post here.

The light woods contrast with the black front door and buffet. Earthy wood serving bowls and glass jars add a touch of coastal to the space.

Guest Prep: Dining Rooms

November 2, 2016

Today I’m back with some more guest prep ideas. After surviving a fun but busy Halloween weekend, my thoughts are now moving on to Thanksgiving and I’m sharing a few guest prep ideas for decorating your dining room in time for the holiday. Here are 5 tips for making your dining rooms entertain ready….

Update your Dining Table and Chairs

Transformed Tuscan Dining Room

Although a new table and chairs are a big expense, it is a quick way to revamp your dining space without major work. In this transformed Tuscan dining room, a rustic trestle table and white wishbone chairs changed the space from dark and heavy to airy and modern. If you are hosting Thanksgiving, it would be fun to update with a large table and new chairs like the unique ones I used below.

Ground the Space with a Durable Rug

I don’t always use a rug in a dining space because of potential messes, but in many dining rooms the warmth and interest it adds to the space is worth any extra work. If your home does not have a formal dining room but instead a  kitchen/dining combo, a rug under the table defines the space. An antique rug in a rich color is gorgeous for the season, or you could look for an easy to vacuum flat-weave rug or an affordable and durable jute or sisal.

Add a Statement Light

Las Palmas Project

An amazing light makes a all the difference. I keep most of my dining spaces clean and minimal but make a statement with the light. In my Las Palmas Project dining space, I chose a bold chandelier that draws attention to the round dining table and complements the rattan chairs. Choose a light that matches the scale of the table and room.

Personalize the Room with a Gallery Wall

Olympic Way Project

Dining rooms are intimate spaces for friends and family to gather. I like to personalize the space with a gallery wall of photos. Not only does it add color and interest, but it is honors the friends and family in the pictures and is a fun way to remember good times. For tips on styling a gallery wall, read my post here.

Style the Table

If your dining room is already dialed in, then all you have left is to create an inviting table display. For a fresh, minimal look, try a simple row of succulents or monochromatic pumpkins in the middle of the table. Or for a more rustic feel, combine natural foliage with a bit of shine. For more inspiration and tips, read here.

Before and After: Olympic Way Project

June 29, 2016

Today I have a total transformation to share with you. I had the pleasure of updating the kitchen and family room spaces of a home for a client who wanted light and bright spaces for her children and grandchildren to visit. The whole feeling of these rooms changed from dark and dated to fresh and inviting. Check out the before and after pictures of the Olympic way project below.

The first and most impactful step of this remodel was paint. By painting all the walls, trim and bookshelves white it dramatically brightened the spaces. The color is Swiss Coffee by Benjamin Moore. It is one of my go to white paints. To see more white paint options you can browse my white paint guide here.

Next, the dark inset carpet was replaced with light gray carpet. Between the paint and the carpet the whole feeling of the room was lifted, creating a fresh foundation for new furnishings.

My client wanted to entertain and have it be a family friendly space so I choose a large sectional in a textured gray linen fabric and upholstered chairs for plenty of comfortable seating.  Pink and coral accents with vintage textiles and warmth from natural wood planters give the space color and interest.

One of my favorite updates are the bookshelves. Styled with new accents and some old treasures, they became a bright and beautiful focal point for the room.

The kitchen got a fresh makeover with a new 3×6 Calcutta tile backsplash that extends to the ceiling for a more modern, custom look. The counters are polished Calacatta Gold marble and look beautiful with the refaced white shaker style cabinetry. Matte black hardware and faucets give the space a refined, modern edge.

A large rectangular lantern in the kitchen nook pairs well with the black accents from the kitchen. By removing existing cabinetry the space became bright and open. A clean, modern wall of black framed family pictures was all the space needed to feel complete with a little personality.  This is a great example of one of my designing mantras – less is more! I love this fresh, crisp space.

Thank you for sharing in the transformation of the Olympic Way project. For a list of resources and to get the look see below. Have a wonderful day!
