Modern Coastal Family Room

Today, I’m excited to share the full reveal of the Talega South Project family room. I really enjoyed designing this inviting and livable space, for a wonderful family of six. My vision was to create a stylish space with a modern coastal vibe, without sacrificing comfort.

This family room joins a light and bright, white kitchen. To maintain the cool, fresh feel of the great room, the walls were painted Silver Drop by Behr.

The basis for this cool, coastal design was a neutral palette. I choose a large comfortable sofa in a light linen and soft, gray slipcovered chairs to blend with the wall color. The Moroccan style rug, Jaipur Zuri from Rugs Direct, grounded the space with a more contemporary style. It’s plush pile and neutral colors were the perfect fit for this livable space.

For a twist on coastal style, I chose vintage and watercolor textiles. This collected mix of pillows and throws were layered on the sofa and chairs to add interest with soothing colors. Their unique, abstract designs give the space a more modern look.

One of my favorite elements of the design are the black accents that give the room a little edge. The black palm wall art from Minted expresses California cool style, while providing a crisp focal point for the room. A black pedestal table and mid-century style tripod lamp were placed to tie in the existing fireplace. When I looked for a coffee table, I knew I wanted one that would work with young children. I love the the round, hammered metal coffee table adds some shine.

To accommodate large gatherings, I added  pink leather stools for extra seating and a hint of fresh color. My goal was for all the colors in the space to evoke a light and airy, coastal vibe. I finished by styling the room with some modern vases, a natural wood tray and a couple of plants to add some warmth and an organic element to the space.

It’s always fun to create spaces that people can really enjoy and live in. I love how this space is casual and inviting but has crisp, modern elements to give it polish. I hope you have enjoyed learning more about this modern coastal living room. To get the look for your own home see below. Have a great day!

Are you willing to share the name of the retailer for the black tripod lamp in your post? Not the West Elm look a like but the actual one you used?

    Thanks in advance!

Wow – I love the chairs and sofa. I am interested in where you purchased them. The couch in the link was a little different than the actual one. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks

Hello! What a gorgeous space! I keep seeing that pink vase pop up in some of my favorite spaces! Is it available through you for purchase? xx

This is gorgeous. I’m in the market for a new sofa and would love to purchase the exact sofa you used here. It looks like the Belgian Classic Slope Arm sofa from RH, but I’m having trouble with fabric. I know sharing your sources can be tricky, but you’d relieve SO much anxiety about going with the wrong fabric if you could give me a direction! I’m thinking either the Belgian Linen Basket Weave in Fog or the Perennials Classic line in Fog. Thanks, already a huge fan, but you’d have a follower for life if you could help me make a big purchase with confidence!

Beautiful job!! Would you mind sharing the white paint trim color? Also, do you think this wall color would work in a room with dark hardwood floors? I love your blog & Instagram!!! Thanks so much!

I love everything about this room. we are waiting to close on our new build home and would love to set up my great room similarly. Would you say those sofas are child friendly? or should I lean towards leather?

Did you end up going with the 35″ coffee table or the 48″? You link to the 48″ but I noticed that it does come in a smaller size. I’m wondering which one is pictured here in this space!

Thanks SO much. I’m a big fan and check your blog weekly! Keep up the gorgeous work and thank you for always being so helpful with sources!

Stunning!! I love how bright and airy it is.
Also IN LOVE with those floors – do you mind sharing the name/colour? I’m looking for that colour for my own home.
    Thank you! 🙂
