DIY Valentine’s Day Polish Chandelier

We have been wanting to team up with Brittany from The House That Lars Built for some time now. We thought Valentines was a perfect opportunity.  Brittany created a Polish chandelier, or pajaki in its native tongue. They are bright, colorful, happy, and folky and we love how her creation turned out. We loved having her genius in one of our designed spaces.

DIY valentines chandelier

See below for how to instructions and where to shop the materials

Materials:

To make the chandelier part it takes a bit of time, found it to be a fun way to pass the time. There are as many components to this as you want there to be. 3D hearts, cut up straws, tassels. You could add pom poms or anything else Valentine’s Day related. The sky’s the limit!
Prep
  1. Spray paint your wreath form pink.
  2. Cut out the hearts with the heart punch. (used this one and loved the heart shape and ease) I cut out a lot in various shades of pinks, reds.
  3. With part of the hearts, hole punch the center. These will be used for the top half of the chandelier. The rest you will follow the instructions below.
  4. Cut the straws in 3″ sections for the top half of the chandelier.
  5. Make 8 tassels to hang from the chandelier in the mint. Secure it with a bit of robin’s egg blue. Tie a little bit around it a few times and then knotted it.
  6. Make the straw swags by cutting the straw into 3 sections: one big (about 2″, one smaller about 1 1/2″, and then the smallest (at about 1″).
To make the top half
  1. Tie the yarn around each of the holes in the wreath form. Make sure it’s a knot that is even so it won’t tip.
  2. Leave enough yarn going through the hole so you can connect it up at the top. I left about 4′ for good measure.
  3. Start on one strand by placing a straw onto the yarn on the base of the wreath form.
  4. Slip on a heart onto the straw. Continue all the way up. Add 16 straws and hearts per yarn strand.
  5. When all the strands are complete, knot them all at the top.
  6. To decorate the wreath form, design with yarn from one hole to the next by wrapping around it in a fan design 5 times each. See below. Tie it tight enough so it doesn’t unravel, but if you feel like you need to hot glue it, do so.
  7. Add in a tassel at each straw point by using a larger piece of yarn and weaving under the yarn on the wreath form.

To make the 3D heart
  1. Once you’ve punched out all your hearts, cut from the bottom of the heart 1/2″ and another heart from the top of the middle of the heart about the same length.
  2. Slide a piece of twine from the bottom of the incised heart.
  3. Tie the twine at the top of the heart. Leave about 5″ at the top to be able to hang it on the chandelier.
  4. Insert the second heart piece from the bottom so that it forms the heart shape. She suggest hanging it above the dip of each paper straw swag.

To make the paper straw swag:

  1. With the three various sized straw shapes, use a strong needle and thread and insert your way about 1/4″ down and through the tops of each straw. We did 40 straws to form one swag leaving some thread on each side to tie it.

Materials:

  • Red Striped Straws
  • Pink Striped Straws
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Needle
  • White Thread
  1. Cut straws into 4 different sizes for each grouping (4 red striped groupings, 4 pink striped groupings):
      • XS: 8 at 1″
      • S: 14 at 1.5″
      • M: 14 at 2″
      • L: 7 at 2.5″
    • Within 1 grouping of the wavy dangle straws layout on your workspace 7 of the following sequence: XS S M L M S
      • End your last sequence with an XS
      • So here is what it will look like:
        • XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS S M L M S XS
          • End your last sequence with an XS
    • There will be 4 red striped groupings and 4 pink striped groupings
  2. Thread your needle and bring the end of the threads together. Double knot
    • With the first grouping laid out, start threading the top of the straws
    • Continue till there are 7 sequence, starting with the XS and ending with the XS
    • Double knot your grouping
  3. Knot of the ends of a grouping to one of the tassels that is around the large structural ring of your chandelier
    • Cut the excess thread
    • Alternate the red striped groupings and pink striped groupings

To make the basketball hoop interior:

Materials:

  • Pink Polka Dot Stripes
  • Twine
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Thin Bamboo Skewer
  • Hot Glue
  1. Cut 16 pieces of twine at 30” length
  2. Tie two pieces of twine where each tassel meets on the large structural ring
  3. Thread a straw on each pieces of twine and bring it all the way to the top (you may need the bamboo skewer to thread your twine through the straw)
    • To temporarily secure the straw so it won’t slide off, place a tape on the twine where your straws ends
  4. Take one of your straws and keep it in one hand, now skip a straw and pick up the next straw.
    • Remove the temporary tape and double knot the two straws together
    • Connect every other straw to each other
      • This will make a cross straw design
  5. Cut 8 straws in half to get 16 pieces
    • Below your cross straw design, thread 1 straw to each twine (temporarily secure the ends with tape)
    • Connect 1 straw to the next one making a “V” shape
    • Cut the excess twine
  6. Hot glue a pink pom pom to the front and back on the end of every other
    • Tie a tassel to the remaining “V’”
